SMS Update: 9/10/21
Posted by SBLSD on 9/13/2021
What a wonderful first week! Mindful always of safety protocols to keep us all safe, our staff spent the week focused on community building and relationships knowing that we all need to feel safe and respected before we embark on the sometimes tough job of learning. These first few weeks are about establishing structures and routines that will provide the support students will need to maximize academic success in the months to come. In this update are some of those important structures and routines.
Thank you to our amazing students for bringing joy, wonder and laughter back into our building; thank you to our incredibly hardworking staff for your unwavering commitment to our students; and thank you to all of our families for your partnership and support. As always, please contact us if you have any questions or need any support or assistance.

This year, schools will have a Monday late start instead of Wednesday. This means middle schools start at 9:05am every Monday this year. Students can be dropped off on Mondays starting at 8:45am unless the student rides the bus.
-
Mondays - school starts at 9:05am and ends at 2:20pm
-
Tuesdays - Fridays: school starts at 7:25am and ends at 2:20pm
Den Time on Mondays
What is Den Time?
This year, students will spend 30 minutes each Monday in Den Time. Den Time will function as a community where every student feels respected, connected, and supported. SMS staff members will establish strong nurturing relationships with their dens and serve as a mentor and advocate. Every Monday morning den advisors will check in with students to make sure they are ready for a week of learning. Topics that will be a point of emphasis in dens will be community building and strategies to promote academic success knowing that our students have not experienced 5-day a week, in-person learning since March 2020.
When is Den Time?
Den Time is every Monday morning from 9:05am to 9:35am.
Who is my child’s Den Time teacher?
Students can look up their schedule in Family Access. Your child’s Den Time teacher is listed as the Advisory teacher in Family Access. In most cases, your child’s Den Time teacher is also a teacher they currently have this semester.
Safety Protocols
For the health and safety of ALL, keep your student home when…-
there has been close contact with anyone confirmed to have, or suspected to have, COVID-19
-
the student has tested positive for, or is waiting on a test for, COVID-19
-
the student has been told to self-isolate or quarantine by public health or a medical professional
-
symptoms indicating illness are present
Call our main office and ask to speak to Jenny Williams (principal), Shena Mouring (assistant principal) or Tara Demma (nurse) if any of these conditions apply. Our staff will work with the district office to identify next steps.
Wear masks at all times while on the bus and in the building, unless eating or drinking. Masks do not have to be worn outside if students are following the 3-feet social distancing expectation.
Follow 3-feet social distancing expectations as much as possible; classroom desks are arranged to provide at least 3-feet of social distancing between students.
Wash hands or use hand sanitizer multiple times throughout the day.
Additional safety protocols are provided in this document what was shared with families on August 30.
Planner Expectations
Knowing that many of our students are out of practice with 5-day a week, in-person learning, SMS staff are committed to helping students keep track of their homework and/or assignments due later in the week. To help us accomplish this goal, every student was given a planner the first week of school and the expectation is that students will use their planners every day in every classroom. Parents and guardians who want to know what their child should be working on each evening should ask to see their child’s planner.
Planner expectations that we reviewed with students:
-
Students will use the following codes to help them know what homework assignment they have and where they can find them.
-
GC--assignment is found in Google Classroom
-
NH--No homework that day
-
P--assignment is a worksheet or piece of paper found in binder
-
-
When the student records the assignment in the planner, they will also write in when the assignment is due.
School Expectations in the Planner
Inside the student planner is a copy of our school’s handbook. We reviewed these school expectations with students last week. Please review the handbook with your child which include:
-
our Guiding Principles that describe how we will provide a safe and supportive environment for everyone at SMS (pages 1-2)
-
the many ways students can become involved at SMS (pages 3-4)
-
chromebook/cell phone expectations (page 6)
-
dress code expectations (page 9)

In the spring, students will take grade level state tests.

No School, Monday, October 18
District staff have a training day on Monday, October 18. Therefore, there will be no school for students on October 18. Students will report to their den class on Tuesday, October 19 for state testing.
State Testing begins October 19
In the state of Washington, students take state and federal tests such as the Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA) and the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS). School districts use results from these tests to measure student learning as well as the progress of the educational system as a whole. Due to the pandemic and sudden school closures in spring 2020, tests were waived in every state across the country. As a result, state tests will look different this year. One difference will be that this fall Sumner-Bonney Lake students will participate in the state tests they missed last spring (see chart below). Students will also test again in the spring.
The fall state tests will have significantly fewer questions and will measure last year’s grade level standards (for example, 6th grade students will take 5th grade tests in the fall). In the spring, students will take grade level state tests.
Staff will go over the testing schedule with students the week of October 11-15. All students will test from 7:25-9:35 on Tuesday, October 19 and Wednesday, October 20. Here is our testing schedule for these two days.
For more details about state testing, please visit the OSPI Testing Site or call our main office at 253-891-5000.
Weekend Meals and Holiday Help
Sumner Middle School is once again teaming with the Sumner/Bonney Lake Food Bank to provide snacks and light meals for the weekend for our families in need. Holiday help will be available as well. Please contact the Guidance Office at 253-891-5011 if you are interested in any of these resources.

First Quarter Ends on November 5
Friday, November 5 represents the end of our First Quarter. Teachers will have First Quarter grades completed by November 12. These grades will then be available on Family Access for students and families to view.
Presentation to All Students on Creating a Positive, Supportive Climate at SMS
Two of our Guiding Principles at SMS are Belonging and Safety (emotional and physical). Belonging means we use kind words and actions when interacting with others as well as treating all individuals with respect and safety.
Safety means our language and actions are free of bullying, intimidation, harassment, stereotypes and discrimination. We have over 710 middle school students who attend our school. As you can imagine, every day someone says or does something that is not considered kind. Last week our office team (administrators, counselors and support staff) met with all students to explain the difference between Harassment/Intimidation/Bullying (HIB) and conflict and to make sure students know how to report if they are feeling unsafe or if they see unsafe actions.
Some key ideas shared in the presentation:
-
HIB tends to be repeated over time, intentionally meant to cause harm and involves an imbalance of power between individuals who are typically not friends; conflict is a struggle between two or more people who appear to have different goals or desires and occurs naturally as we interact with one another.
-
No one is perfect and mistakes will be made; when mistakes are made we own it, make amends (if necessary), learn from it and move on.
-
Everyone deserves to feel safe and respected at SMS every day, no exceptions
-
We are all different; we will celebrate and respect our differences
-
If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all
-
We do not “have fun” at someone else’s expense
